Classroom management for teenagers

Who is the course for?

The course is intended for TEFL teachers who are struggling to control their teenage groups, especially those teachers who do not have any schoolteaching experience, or any experience teaching teenagers.

How long is the course?

This is a 6 hour short course usually held over one day at our training centre in Toulouse.

Why is it needed in France?

One difficulty in France is that TEFL teachers are considered to be “soft” and “easy targets”, because we smile and praise and encourage – all good practice in language teaching of course.

This supportive approach can unfortunately be perceived as “weakness” by French teenagers who are accustomed to strictness –  and even bullying and ridicule from their teachers. So a bit like “the student teacher” at school, they tend to misbehave and see your lessons as “free time”…. with all that that entails.

What will I learn on the course?

You will learn why teenagers cause problems (often without meaning to),  how to speak and relate to them, activity types to keep them engaged, record keeping, conflict management, how to keep the pace up, teacher language for teenagers, what to do when things get out of hand, dealing with parents….

Give me a couple of  tips now – I’ve got a lesson tomorrow..

The main trick with teenagers is keeping them busy, avoiding confrontation and understanding why they are being difficult.

Who runs the course?

The course is run by Jonathan Davies, the Director of TEFL Toulouse, and a former school teacher of French at schools in Bristol, UK.

How much is it?

The course costs 80 euros  to join a group session, or 200 euros  for a one to one course.

Course dates 2024
